Consolidated P2Y Ranger Forgeign Buyers

The Consolidated P2Y's success attracted interest from foreign countries.

The first Ranger exported was a P2Y-1C sold to Columbia on December 31, 1932. It was virtually identical to the domestic P2Y-1, except for some modifcastons to the bombsight and radia equipment. Based on Columbia records it is possible a second was sold, but Consolidated has no record of it. It operated against Peru in the the Leticia War (September 1932 - May 1933) and was retired in 1948. Japan only bought one P2Y-1J in Janaury 1935, but it would influence Japanese design of its patrol aircraft used in World War II. It was used as test against current Japanese patrol aircraft by the Kawanishi Company. The influence of the Consoldated P2Y can clearly be seen in the design of Japanese patrol aircraft used in World War II. The four-engined Kawanishi Type 97 H6K1-5, of which 217 were delivered starting in 1938, shows the heavy influence of the P2Y-1 on the design. This influence can also be seen in the two-engine Yokosuka Navy Type 99 Flying Boat Model 11 introduced in 1939 as a potentail replacement for the four-engined models. Because of poor performance only 20 were built between 1939 and 1941.

Argentina placed the largest order, buying a total six aircraft designated P2Y-3A delivered in August and September 1937. The engines were the Wright GR1820-F52 developing 770 hp with standard controlled pitch 3-bladed props. They served as maritime patrol aircraft and in exploration. They flew patrols for the Declartion of Panama in October 1939 out of Puerto Belgrano and served in World War II until 1945 when they were gradually replaced by Consolidated PBYs. They were all retired by 1949.
