Each galley had a pay record for the crew. this record kept track of the the amount of money they were prepaid, usually three months in advance, and any expenses or bonuses. This example comes from 1285 and is for two galleys and two barcas. There is strong evidence that two pay records were kept, one on the vessel and one in the fleet archive with all the crew and stores information up to the time of sailing. This pay record is an example of such a pay book.
